Yes, a small business owner can obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) without having an LLC or even if they already have an LLC.
An EIN is a unique tax identification number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to businesses for tax reporting purposes.
How can I apply for just an EIN?
At the moment, our platform provides the option to purchase an EIN as a stand-alone item. Meaning, you can apply for an EIN number regardless of your LLC. Please note that the EIN Standalone service is currently accessible only in the United States.
To do so, you can follow these simple steps:
- Log In to your Tailor Brands account
- From the left-hand panel select EIN
- Take around 10 minutes to respond to the application questions
Once your EIN document is ready, it will be available for you to download through this section of your Tailor Brands account.
In summary, having an LLC is not a requirement for obtaining an EIN. Business owners can apply for an EIN based on their specific needs and business structure, whether it's a sole proprietorship, LLC, partnership, corporation, or other entity. It's essential to consult with a legal or tax professional to determine the specific requirements for your business and ensure compliance with IRS regulations.
Please note that the IRS allows only one person to be designated as the Responsible Party for the EIN. If you have more than one responsible party, list the person you want the IRS to recognize and this individual will be the one legally responsible for the company before the IRS.
Please note that legal laws and regulations are subject to frequent changes. While we aim to provide helpful information, it's important to understand that this page serves only for informational purposes and does not provide legal or tax advice.
